Dua for Travelling

Authentic Dua for Travelling from the Quran & Hadith

The dua for travelling in Islam comes directly from the Quran. Muslims recite it when boarding any vehicle, car, train, or aeroplane. It is an acknowledgement that Allah alone makes every form of transport possible, and that our return is always to Him.

Here is the main Islamic dua for travel, as taught by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH):

The Main Dua for Travelling

Transliteration:  Subhānal-ladhī sakhkhara lanā hādhā wa mā kunnā lahū muqrinīn. Wa innā ilā Rabbinā lamunqalibūn.

Meaning:  “Glory be to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could not have done it ourselves. And indeed, to our Lord we shall return.” (Surah Az-Zukhruf, 43:13–14)

After this dua, say Allahu Akbar three times, then recite the full Prophet’s travel dua below. This is the complete Sunnah sequence.

What Is the Dua for Travelling and Where Does It Come From?

The dua for travelling comes from Surah Az-Zukhruf, verses 13 and 14. Allah revealed these words as a reminder for every believer. Every time you board a car, train, or aeroplane, you are using a creation that Allah alone subjected to humanity.

The phrase Subhānal-ladhī sakhkhara lanā hādhā means “Glory be to Him who made this obedient to us.” It is a moment of humility and gratitude. You are acknowledging that the vehicle beneath you, the engine powering it, and the sky ahead, all of it is under Allah’s command, not yours.

The Prophet (PBUH) recited this dua every time he mounted an animal or began a journey. Ibn Abbas (RA) narrated that he would say Allahu Akbar three times upon settling into his mount, then recite this verse. This is the Sunnah we follow today, whether the journey is five miles or five thousand.

Dua for Leaving the Home Before Travelling

Before you reach the airport or station, there is a dua to recite at your own front door. The dua for travelling begins the moment you step outside your home, not at the departure gate.

Dua When Leaving the House

Transliteration:  Bismillāhi, tawakkaltu ‘alallāh, wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh.

Meaning:  “In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no power nor strength except with Allah.” (Tirmidhi, Hadith 3426)

This is a complete declaration of tawakkul, full reliance on Allah. When a person recites this, leaving their home, an angel says: “You have been guided, protected, and kept away from harm.” The Shaytan turns away and says, ‘What can I do with a man who has been guided, protected, and kept from harm?’

This dua is for every journey, your morning commute, the school run, a business trip, and the greatest journey of all: leaving home for Umrah.

The Prophet’s Complete Travel Dua (PBUH)

This is the most important dua for a safe journey in the entire Sunnah. Most people only know the first line. The complete dua from Sahih Muslim (1342) has four parts, each asking Allah for something different.

Full Prophetic Travel Dua, All 4 Parts

Transliteration:  Allāhumma innā nas’aluka fī safarinā hādhā al-birra wat-taqwā, wa minal-‘amali mā tarḍā. | Allāhumma hawwin ‘alaynā safaranā hādhā waṭwi ‘annā bu’dah. Allāhumma anta aṣ-Ṣāḥibu fis-safar, wal-Khalīfatu fil-ahl. | Allāhumma innī a’ūdhu bika min wa’thā’is-safar, wa ka’ābatil-manẓar, wa sū’il-munqalab fil-māli wal-ahl.

Meaning:  Part 1: “O Allah, we ask You on this journey for goodness and piety, and for deeds that please You.”

2: “O Allah, make this journey easy for us and shorten its distance.”

3: “O Allah, You are our Companion in travel and the Protector of our family at home.”

4: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel, distressing sights, and from returning home with harm to my wealth and family.” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1342) (Abu Dawud, Hadith 2598–2600)

Recite this once you are seated and ready to move, seatbelt on, train doors closed, or the plane beginning to taxi. Each part covers a different need: righteousness, ease, companionship, and protection. Together, they are a complete shield for any journey.

Most people only know Part 1. Reciting all four parts takes under 60 seconds and covers everything a traveller needs from Allah.

Dhikr During the Journey, Going Uphill and Downhill

This is one of the most practical and often forgotten Sunnah habits for the Umrah traveller. The Prophet (PBUH) taught a simple dhikr for when you are physically going up or coming down, whether climbing stairs with luggage, taking a ramp, or as your plane ascends and descends.

⬆  Going uphill or ascending: Allahu Akbar, Allah is the Greatest

⬇  Going downhill or descending: SubhanAllah, Glory be to Allah

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1342)

This keeps your tongue in dhikr throughout the entire journey. It turns a long flight, a coach ride through the hills, or a walk up to your hotel room into a continuous act of worship.

Dua When You Arrive, Hotel, Rest Stop, or Any New Place

When you arrive at your hotel, a rest stop, or any new location, recite this dua before you settle in. It is a powerful protection supplication from the Prophet (PBUH).

Dua Upon Arriving at Any New Place

Transliteration:  A’ūdhu bikalimatillāhit-tāmmati min sharri mā khalaq.

Meaning:  “I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2708)

The Prophet (PBUH) said that whoever recites this dua when arriving at a place, nothing will harm them until they leave. For Umrah travellers checking into their hotel in Makkah or Madinah for the first time, this is the first act of worship to perform in the room, before unpacking, before anything else.

Dua for Entering a New City or Town

When your taxi enters Makkah, or your coach approaches Madinah, recite this dua. It asks Allah for every good that exists in this place, and protection from every harm.

Dua for Entering a New City

Transliteration:  Allāhumma innī as’aluka khayraha wa khayra ahliha wa khayra mā fīhā, wa a’ūdhu bika min sharrihā wa sharri ahliha wa sharri mā fīhā.

Meaning:  “O Allah, I ask You for the goodness of this city, the goodness of its people, and the goodness of what is in it. I seek refuge in You from its evil, the evil of its people, and the evil of what is in it.” (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1342)

For a UK Muslim arriving in Makkah for the first time, saying this dua as the city comes into view is one of the most profoundly emotional moments of the entire Umrah journey.

Dua When Returning Home

When the Prophet (PBUH) returned from travel and came near home, he would say this beautiful closing dua. It ends the journey with repentance, worship, and praise of Allah.

Return Dua

Transliteration:  Āyibūna, tā’ibūna, ‘ābidūna, li-Rabbinā ḥāmidūn.

Meaning:  “We return, we repent, we worship, and we praise our Lord.”

(Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1342)

Recite this as you land back at Heathrow, Gatwick, or Manchester Airport. It closes the journey the same way the Prophet (PBUH) closed his, with gratitude and worship, not just relief.

Sunnah Acts That Make Your Journey Blessed

Duas are most powerful when paired with Sunnah actions. Here are the key Sunnah practices every traveller should know:

  • Pray two rak’ah before you leave: The Prophet (PBUH) would perform two voluntary rak’ah before departing on any journey. This invites Allah’s protection and barakah from the very start.
  • Give sadaqah before travelling: The Prophet (PBUH) said charity is a shield from calamity. Even a small donation before you leave carries profound spiritual protection.
  • Appoint an Ameer when travelling in a group: If you are travelling with family or a community group, designate one person to lead decisions, manage timings, and keep the group organised. This is a direct Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH).
  • Start early in the day: The Prophet (PBUH) made dua for barakah in the early hours. Wherever possible, begin long journeys in the morning.
  • Keep family informed: Let your family know your route, expected arrival time, and contact details. Responsibility toward family is part of Islamic travel etiquette.

Why These Duas Matter Even More When You Perform Umrah

When a UK Muslim boards a flight from London, Manchester, or Birmingham to Makkah, they are not simply travelling. They are answering a divine call. Every dua for performing Umrah becomes infinitely more powerful when your destination is the House of Allah.

The Prophet (PBUH) made a specific dua at every single stage of his journeys. He did not treat travel as a gap between worship. He made the entire journey an act of worship itself. This is the Sunnah every Umrah traveller follows.

Your dua to perform Umrah does not begin at the Miqat. It begins the moment you step out of your front door in Leeds, Bradford, or Glasgow with a sincere intention in your heart. When you book with Alhadi Travel, our UK-based consultants send you a complete dua guide before you travel, so you arrive in Makkah spiritually prepared, not just logistically ready.

How to Make Dua Properly While Travelling, Prophetic Etiquette

Reciting the words is the beginning. Making dua with the correct etiquette transforms it into a living act of worship:

  • Begin with Bismillah before every journey, every boarding, every departure, no matter how short the trip.
  • Recite Allahu Akbar three times when mounting or boarding any vehicle. This follows the Sunnah narrated in Sahih Muslim.
  • Face the Qibla if possible when making dua, particularly when reciting before boarding your Umrah flight.
  • Make dua with full sincerity. Your heart must be present, not just your lips. Empty recitation is words. Sincere recitation is worship.
  • Recite the arrival dua when entering every new place, hotel, city, or rest stop.
  • Recite the return dua when coming home. Close every journey the way the Prophet (PBUH) closed his, with praise and repentance.

You now have the duas. You have the knowledge and have the intention. The only step left is to book.

Frequently Asked Questions

The main dua for travelling comes from Surah Az-Zukhruf (43:13–14): Subhānal-ladhī sakhkhara lanā hādhā wa mā kunnā lahū muqrinīn. Wa innā ilā Rabbinā lamunqalibūn. It means: ‘Glory be to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could not have done it ourselves. And indeed, to our Lord we shall return.’ Recite it every time you board any vehicle, then say Allahu Akbar three times and follow with the full 4-part Prophetic travel dua.

The complete dua for a safe journey is the full Prophetic travel dua from Sahih Muslim (1342). It has four parts: asking for righteousness and piety, asking for ease, acknowledging Allah as your Companion and Protector of your family, and seeking refuge from the hardships of travel. Most people only know part one, reciting all four takes under 60 seconds and covers everything.

Recite the leaving-home dua (Abu Dawud, 5095) when stepping out of your front door. Recite the Quranic dua and full Prophetic dua when seated and ready to move. Say “Allahu Akbar” going uphill and “SubhanAllah” going downhill. Recite the arrival dua (Muslim, 2708) at every new place. Say the entering-city dua when approaching any new city. Say the return dua (Muslim, 1342) when nearing home.

The dua to perform Umrah begins with your niyyah at the Miqat: Labbayk Allāhumma ‘Umrah, ‘Here I am, O Allah, for Umrah.’ However, every travel dua recited on the way to Makkah is also a dua for Umrah when your intention is sincere. The journey itself becomes ibadah from the moment you step out of your home with the right intention.

Recite: Bismillāhi, tawakkaltu ‘alallāh, wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh. (Abu Dawud, 5095). It means: ‘In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no power nor strength except with Allah.’ When you recite this, an angel tells you: ‘You have been guided, protected, and kept away from harm.’
